The doctors at Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome treated a 4-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, refractory to conventional therapies, through the genetic manipulation of the cells of the immune system to make them able to recognize and attack the tumor. One month after the infusion of the reprogrammed cells, the baby is well and has been discharged: in the marrow no more leukemic cells are present.
